So far I'm enjoying this new HP ... it does the basics, which is just what I need it for.

Stop dropping laptops LOL, I keep my Vostro V131 in a neoprene sleeve, and then into my T-Tech laptop bag. good padding. Need a PC just to run a flight sim? (this one is for mac: amzn.com/B007TMFD7C)I guess you could make a really small form factor PC, I built my full size gaming rig for about $900, but it's pretty boss. A small form factor Gaming PC might be around $400-$600, depending on the specs. For instance: Mini ITX Z77 board - $60 Core i3 - $150 Shuttlebox case with psu - $60 GTX 650ti - $150 (or GTX 660 - $230) 4gb Corsair Vengeance Ram - $25 500gb HDD - $50 It will no doubt play games better than any mac mini or mac for the same cost. I have no doubt that it would perform better and cost less, however, I just don't have the time (or know how) to put something like that together. I am good with electronics and fixing things in general, but I'm basically lost on computers. If I was nearby, I could build one for you in an hour :/, I built mine in 2 hours cause of the custom lighting and cable management. Kind of weird how I'm uber-knowledgeable about computer electronics, but completely clueless on car electronics. If you ever have more time, and want an easy way to learn, watch these vids from NeweggTV: I basically learned everything from this series.

About 1 hor to assemble, a lil more time to install windows and such. If you run a SSD, windows installs in about 10-20 miutes.

So if you want a powerful desktop on a budget, what do you recommend? I've had my HP laptop for about 6-7 years now, and it's finally beginning to bite the dust and over heat and slowing down. I have windows 7 on it and do love it, but the battery always craps out on this thing. RIght now it won't charge past 18%. I want a desktop with a quad core processor, at least 8-10 gb of ram and at least 1.5 tb hard drive. I will be doing a lot of video editing so a good graphics card would be needed as well.
Any advice? pre built or make my own?

Any advice? pre built or make my own? Are you able build your own? If not, Dell/HP workstations are the best options for video editing. Quadro gpu's are great, but a gtx 670/680 should do ok. IMportant items like SSD's and Video file Scratch drives should be taken into consideration. Dual WD Velociraptor drive in raid 1 should be lightning quick with redundancy, but dual WD black drives should be good too. You can try Raid 0, but it stripes the data evenly across both drives. So if 1 drive fails, you're SOL. Here's a good guide, www.videoguys.com/Guide/E/Videoguys+DIY9+Sneak+Peek+Its+Time+for+Sandy+Bridge+E/0xe9b142f408a2b03ab88144a434e88de7.aspxI'll check my other source when I get home, I rarely do video editing.

Thanks man. I don't see why I wouldn't be able to build my own. I can take apart a desktop, so I assume putting one together can't be that hard. Just have to make sure I buy everything I need. A tower, motherboard, drives, graphics card, cd/dvd/bluray drive, memory ram, hard drive, and some other parts. first, i need money. haha.
